Baccarat has a reputation for being a high rollers game and the tables are normally separate from the rest of the casino in there own section called the pit. The game of baccarat is unlike most casino games as the is no level of skill involved the reason for this is that neither the player or dealer has any options or decisions to make during the course of the game. This means the game is quite simple especially as there are only three possible bets that can be made. The table layout is quite simple and consists of fourteen numbered positions seven on each side of the dealer; the number thirteen is omitted as it is considered unlucky. The aim of the game is to get as close to 9 as possible and if you are nearer then you win. All picture cards count as 10 and aces count as 1. Player and dealer are both dealt two cards to start with, if either of them has a two card total of 8 or 9 then they must immediately turn over the cards. If either you or the dealer has a 6 or 7 then you must stand if you stand on a 6 or 7 then the dealer must hit on a score of less than 5. If the dealer has 1 then he must draw. If the dealer has 4 then he must draw if your card is a 2-3-4-5-6-7. If the dealer has 5 then he must draw if your card is a 4-5-6-7. If the dealer has 7 then he must stand.

The game is played using a fixed set of rules for the player and the dealer, and these rules represent the best odds of winning for both the player and for the house. You may have heard of the 1 - 3 - 2 - 6 baccarat system. With this approach you keep track of what you bet over the course of four hands.

  • First, bet one unit. If you win add another, making the second bet a total of three units.
  • If you win the second bet there are six units on the table. Remove four, making the third bet two units.
  • If the third bet wins, add two more units for a total of six on the fourth bet.
  • If the fourth bet wins, you collect a total of 12 units, ten of pure profit. If you win the first bet but lose the second, that's two units you've lost. If you win the second bet but lose the third bet, your profit is two units. If you win the first three bets but lose the fourth, you break even. The same system will work for any casino game that pays out even-money. The casino's always win in the long run. To even out the odds the house charges a commission (usually 5%) on winning player bets placed on the house. How should this change the way a player wagers? Factoring in the commission it turns out that you are still slightly better off by betting that the house will win. Removing the tie hands in the event there is no payoff, the odds of the player winning are 492% and for losing 508%.
